COUPLES THERAPY

Couples often come to counseling because they feel stuck or aren’t able to resolve reoccurring arguments.  In couples therapy, I remain a neutral party listening to both perspectives and allowing space for each individual’s unique experience. Whether you are seeking couples therapy because you are in conflict or are interested in deepening your connection, I can help you.

Couples counseling largely focuses on identifying the patterns that keep your relationship from progressing and growing. By defining these differences we can then work toward learning how to manage and negotiate them without blaming or distancing.

The most common problem for couples is communication, which is intrinsically related to feelings of being misunderstood and can lead to poor listening skills. For example, your partner may say something that causes an eruption of emotions within you. You may have stopped listening because you are preparing your rebuttal. We will identify issues that get in the way of being present for, and listening to your partner.

In our work I pay close attention not only to the content of the conflict but how you engage in conflict. By identifying how you interact during these times we can begin to determine healthier and more effective ways of dealing with the stressors and disagreements within your relationship. In therapy we will create opportunities for couples to feel connected by building on the strengths of the relationship and rediscovering the mutual love within it.
